A lot of us have heard the term “Omega-3” but may not know exactly what it means. Today we will look at all the benefits Omega-3s offer! It is one of the most researched health topics and plays many vital roles in our health. Omega-3s are important for all of us!
Omega-3 is really just a shorthand way of referring to Omega-3 fatty acids. Because our bodies cannot produce these fatty acids, it’s important that we get them from our diet.
Fortunately, Omega 3 rich foods aren’t hard to find in various foods. Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sea bass, oysters, sardines, herring and anchovies are one of the most common sources. Canola and linseed oil. Walnuts, brussel sprouts, eggs, soybeans, chia seeds, wild rice and spinach also contain Omega-3s. You may have an Omega-3 deficiency if you have dry, lackluster hair or rough, bumpy patches of skin. Soft, brittle nails may also be an indicator. There are a number of other warning signs, but it’s probably best to ensure you are eating foods with Omega-3s no matter what.
Omega 3 Benefits
Omega-3s aren’t just good for hair, skin, and nails—they help your body in many other ways, too! They can improve eye health, fight against depression and anxiety, improve risk factors associated with heart disease, reduce fat on the liver, improve bone and joint health, and fight inflammation, just to name a few! They’re especially important when it comes to children. Omega-3s have been shown to reduce symptoms of ADHD in children, and they play a very important role in the brain development of infants. During pregnancy, Omega-3s are crucial! Your little one needs them for proper development. Infants whose mothers consumed high amounts of Omega-3s showed higher levels of intelligence, less behavioral problems, and decreased risk of developmental delay. Something to think about for all the soon-to-be moms out there!
Omega-3s aren’t just good for ladies who are expecting… they’re good for those of us aging up! They fight age-related mental decline as well as Alzheimer’s. I realize that may still seem like a future concern rather than a present one, but it’s never too early (or late!) to start building up your health. It’s important at every age!
I’ve talked about how important sleep is for overall health here on the blog, and Omega-3s can help with that, too! Studies have been done with both children and adults that show the benefits of Omega-3 during sleep. It’s shown to improve the length of quality of sleep, which y’all know is important for every other aspect of your health!
If you’ve never thought about Omega-3s before today, I hope you learned a little bit about why we need them to stay healthy and how they can help in people of all ages. Exercise is important, of course, but diet is just as necessary! You know the saying, “you can’t outrun a bad diet”… well, it’s true! Take some time to eat foods rich in Omega-3. Give yourself one less thing to worry about!
