What does that look like today?

Your perspective of “older” changes as you age! Studies show, we are living longer these days, and that tends to make the way we view old age very different. How we view ourselves changes constantly as we age, too. Plus, times are different… in my grandmother’s day, they made weekly trips to the beauty shop (at age 50!) to have their gray and white hair fixed matronly! Not so much anymore! Thank the Lord because I’m not ready to throw in the towel yet!

I love to tell people my age because they never believe me, and that’s always great to hear! I remember when I thought 55 was so old!! Well, not anymore! I feel better in my skin than I ever have before! That wisdom thing is truth!! It’s like I finally know myself, get myself, and see younger people close to me beginning to learn (or at least needing to). When you do, it’s called soul growth and it’s a beautiful thing!

It’s so important to stay active and not curl up and die like many people think older people should do!! Young or older, we all need physical activity. The reduced risk of chronic diseases, increased life expectancy, reduced risk of heart disease, reduced risk of dying early and simply making the aging process much easier are all worthy elements to keep yourself in a healthy lifestyle! I plan to teach some form of exercise for the rest of my life! It may end up being chair aerobics, but you can bet your bottom dollar I will teach it!

As you age, you also get to escape scrutiny, and that is one of the best things about aging! You don’t feel like you are getting that evil side eye as much from others if you are out looking your best! And if you are getting it, when they hear your age, then their entire body language changes towards you! It goes from, “who does she think she is?!” to “go girl, you are killing it!” It’s so freeing! You no longer care what others think of you; you own it, and that is so amazing in itself! That’s why I say embrace aging with grace because it just keeps getting better as long as you take care of yourself! Our mantra should be: “Like fine wine we get better over time!” Cheers!

Given how much longer people are living and how much healthier they are at that time, our ideas of age are indeed changing. People in their 40's and 50's (like me) are treating aging differently than previous generations. “40 is the new 30” and I like it!

You make so many mistakes in your 20's thinking your 30's will be so much better, but most of us still make some of those same mistakes again until we start to figure some of it out. Your 40's can be very productive and wonderful because you do start to feel good in your own skin. I am loving my 50's, and at 55, I feel like I am finally to that “wiser” spot you hear about becoming when you are older! You just know you know what you know, and you no longer need the approval of others. You are less judgmental and more forgiving, which is a plus!

In 2018 Michigan State University conducted an online survey and the majority thought that old age begins at 50... oh my goodness! The older adults who say they feel younger than they actually are turn out to be the ones who normally live longer, healthier lives for the most part. Saying is believing!

Also, the statistics are in, and the more active you stay, the better you age overall. Fact: people who have a positive attitude about aging tend to age slower. There are reports that people who have negative attitudes tend to walk slower as they age, have a greater likelihood for brain changes that lead to Alzheimer’s disease, and can even be at risk of a reduction in lifespan!

Research has found that a positive attitude and exercise are the top two components to aging slower. No “grumpy old men attitudes” and you are on your way to a brighter future! Laughing has been found to be beneficial, so always try to see the humor in things!

Stay active by at least walking—and participate in my classes at laurenfoxondemand.com? I show modifications for every move, plus, I am starting to add more 30-minute beginner classes to get you started if it’s been a while since you exercised. I truly want to help, so please feel free to email me with any questions, etc. at laurenfoxondemand.com.

Until next time stay positive, eat your fruits and vegetables, get moving and enjoy the rest of your wonderful life!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Hi y’all! During this time of year with Thanksgiving approaching, I always think about being thankful and grateful. In fact, I wrote a blog a few months ago about the “gratitude attitude”...btw, you should go read that one too!

I have been telling all of my classes to think of one thing they are thankful for in their lives. It made me think about the different stages in my life and how some things you appreciate like your loved ones and your health stay the same year after year, but others can change a whole lot with each decade.

When I was a little girl, I was so thankful for my grandparents, Memaine and Papa. I lived with them the first 7 1/2 years of my life for the most part and am still thankful for the role they played in making me who I am today. Your younger years create that foundation you build the rest of your life on and they sure made me feel safe and loved which is so important.

As a teenager I was thankful that my sweet mama always bought me the cutest clothes and she always took me to visit some great places which in turn made me a fashionista and helped develop my love for travel and good restaurants. Having a fun, pretty and cool mom is always a plus!

As a young adult I remember being grateful that my children were healthy and happy. They were my main focus for many years and are still at the top of my “Thankful list” today! (Along with my 5 grandchildren they have given me!)
But as I have aged, my perspective has changed. I now know not to take the beautiful moments in life for granted and those small moments are what I truly treasure. Through the years I had relationships that weren’t the best. They were like trying to put a square peg in a round hole! I lived through abuse, betrayal, controlling behaviors from others, heartbreak and more, but I am so thankful that I did not let it make me bitter or negative. I am truly blessed to have been able to stay positive and keep a smile on my face through it all. I am so relieved that I kept that happy heart open because now I have a wonderful healthy marriage that makes my life perfect! It took a while, but Prince Charming finally came knocking! The funny thing is that we met in elementary school, went to middle school and high school together graduating in the same class in 1982! Even went to the same College before he left for dental school. I obviously have gratitude for my Ricky and am so thankful for all of the support and love he gives me daily. I do wonder how we missed the love connection for so many years, but it makes me think that we had to walk our path to find our way back to each other with true appreciation and adoration. My point to this part of the story is don’t let life get you down or make you negative because there is a lot more to come and you want to be ready to accept it and be thankful when it finally does! I am also very thankful for my career and all of the wonderful people I have met along the way. I am so blessed to be able to help people transform into better versions of themselves...physically and mentally. Exercise has so many benefits and I am grateful to be able to continue to share it in my former studio which I just sold and globally with laurenfoxondemand.com! It is very rewarding and I am thankful for finding my true mission in life.

Now Ricky and I have created a nonprofit to fight childhood obesity called the Fox Fitness Project. Giving back will always make you happy and more thankful! I get to help keep people’s children healthy which I’m sure is at the top of their “thankful list”!

Bottom line, I’m saying is to just be thankful for what you have and you will end up having even more! As bad as life can seem at times, remember there is someone else dealing with worse. Just try to look for those silver linings, smile and know that the best is yet to come! Thank you for your continued support! I hope you and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Barre Workout
Be Your Inner Rock Star!

For those of you who have done my class in recent years, you know I always called it “Celeb Barre.” Now I’ve got “ROCKSTAR BARRE!” This class fuses different disciplines of exercise into an entirely new format. The name really got me thinking… how do you connect to your inner rock star? What does it take to rock the barre like a star? So that’s what I want to talk about today—finding your inner rock star!!

First of all, what I know for sure is that my rock star barre class is addicting! It heats you up from the inside out and is an amazing way to burn fat, release toxins which results in weight loss! The endorphins you feel after a good body workout are part of what makes this class so enticing! That will definitely get you feeling like a rock star! But when it comes to connecting to yourself and feeling the power not just on the outside, but on the inside, too... it’s more than a good feeling after releasing toxins. It’s about real power that comes from physical activity!

I started thinking about The Wizard of Oz and how all Dorothy wants is to get back home. She tries all different sorts of things to find her way, but in the end, Glenda the good witch tells her, “You’ve always had the power, my dear. You just had to learn it for yourself.” This applies to us, ladies!! We have the power within us! All we have to do is see it for ourselves! Teaching exercise has always been so rewarding for me because you can see people finding their own power. I watch lives change from the inside out! I can see the glow and the beauty that comes from someone who realizes just how much they can achieve with their own power. It even affects your family… you’re happier, less stressed, and more patient! I can’t tell you how many men have come up to me and thanked me for helping their wives and girlfriends with such a big life transformation. The long-term effects are outstanding! When you find your power, you have more to give those around you because you are happier with yourself. That’s real change!!

You can truly find yourself in a workout… that’s when the transformation happens. I can give you the space and workout routines to follow, but finding that inner rock star is something you have to do on your own. It’s a different experience for every person! Maybe you have a little ritual you go through to mentally prepare for your workout… that’s what I do! Over the years, I’ve developed a routine that helps me get ready for the hard work ahead! It helps me get to my inner rock star. For me, it’s my rock star bracelet! It’s perfect for exercise because it’s lightweight and doesn’t make noise no matter if I'm strength training, aerobic training or barre. When I put that bracelet on, I’m ready. I know its game time! I let it be a symbol that helps transform me into the rock star I know I am!

Find what preparation works for you! Maybe you experiment with different things until you find what you like. Send me feedback and let me know what you’re trying and what’s working! There is room for all of us to be rock stars. We should support each other and draw out the best parts of those around us! Helping others is so rewarding. Helping the world is what makes me the happiest! That’s why I started my nonprofit, the Fox Fitness Project, to fight childhood obesity! You don’t have to start a nonprofit to help though—find your unique way to be the light and love to those around you! Not only do I want you to find your workout power and put on your ruby red slippers to become the BEST version of YOU… but I also want you to find your own personal power! I want you to find your passion in life! I want you to wake up healthy, energized and ready to ROCK the world like the star that you are!!

I always say, “Rock the barre like a star!” and with the holidays around the corner, share our Rockstar Barre class by giving the “GIFT of HEALTH” this year!? You can purchase memberships for your family and friends or refer www.laurenfoxondemand.com to them! Then you will receive a free month for yourself while spreading the love and the power! It’s a win-win!!

Just like Beyonce says, “Who runs the world? GIRLS!” She’s so right… Let’s get it done, ladies! Find your inner rock star and you’ll never want to go back! Find the power in yourself and help others do the same. Love to you all!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Eating Out Healthy!
Food For Fitness

Whether you hate cooking or you just enjoy eating out at restaurants, it’s important to figure out how to stay healthy when you aren’t making the food you eat for yourself! Or maybe you are like me and it’s just hard to find time to cook due to work overload! Whatever the reason, enjoying a meal out should not ruin your healthy eating goals or ruin your diet and exercise plan!!

Here are a few tips and tricks for committing to healthy eating while at a restaurant:

Don’t feel the need to eat it all. While cleaning your plate is nice and makes you feel like you got your money’s worth, don’t be afraid to take a to-go box!! It’s best to ask for a to-go container when your meal is served… remove the temptation from your sight and feel good about getting two meals for one price!

Many places serve way more food than should be eaten by one person! You can consider sharing an entrée, too. You don’t have to lick the plate clean! Even if you’re getting healthy food, you shouldn’t overeat. My grandmother always made me clean my plate, but portions were much smaller back in the day! Today’s portions are out of control!! Ricky and I split entrees a lot or take half of it home. Try it out!!

Look at the ingredients when listed. Certain dishes will inherently be healthier than others… and you can usually get a good estimate of that by reading the description of the dish. Look out for words like creamy, crispy, and breaded. These are likely less healthy options. Instead, aim for dishes that use words like grilled, steamed, seared, or roasted. Go for food for fitness. Eating out doesn’t mean you have to neglect good dietary practices.

Eat the meat! Look for lean meats like turkey and chicken. If you’re getting beef, go for a leaner cut. By eating meat, you’ll feel full faster… and that keeps you from eating too many carbs!! And if you prefer eating vegan or vegetarian, here’s a list of some great sources of protein you can try. Chickpeas, edamame, quinoa, kidney beans, oats, walnuts, peanut butter, lentils, tofu, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds and black beans. If you don’t know what else you could get or you simply want to know more, consider getting a free fitness consultation.

Be smart with the sides. If your entrée comes with side dishes, opt for healthy food such as veggies, fruit, soup, or light salads with low-fat dressing. With soup, go for a lighter soup instead of a heavy, creamy one. Consider vegetable soup over bisque. With a side salad, stay away from too many high-fat ingredients such as cheese and croutons. Lettuce and spinach are a good place to start!

Beware the bread and chips. Carbs….Ugh! You know when you sit down at a table and the waiter immediately sets down a basket of fresh bread? You can ask them not to! If the temptation is too great, ask for no bread. If you look at fitness tips for women and men, you’ll notice them say that it’s better to be without. It’s also worth noting that whole wheat or whole grain bread is better than something like garlic toast.

If you’re at a Mexican restaurant, don’t overdo it on the chips!! Easier said than done! We munch away on the chips and salsa and then feel like we need to eat the whole meal that comes after! Be careful about portion size and how much you’re eating before the real food actually comes!

Try mixing up the type of food you eat! Now I know some of y’all are picky eaters, but consider branching out! A lot of ethnic foods are healthier than other types of foods. For example, it’s easier to eat healthy food at a Japanese, Thai, or Greek restaurant than it is at a Mexican or Italian restaurant. There are more options for grilled meat and vegetables!

Look for Food for Fitness. The Fitness Fad is here to stay and many restaurants have catered to the people’s desire to stick to their diet and exercise plans. For the same reason, many are amenable to you altering your dishes to meet your macronutrient needs.

Think of the Drink. You might have a lot of healthy food on your plate but you also have to be mindful of what you drink. Even fruit shakes may have more sugar and sweeteners than you'd expect. If you really can't do without do some research into your favorite refresher. Water, fat-free or low-fat milk, or unsweetened tea are always on the menu if you can.

Share a Dish. If you're an adventurous eater, sharing a dish with family and friends is a great way to explore healthy food without spending too much on ordering the different dishes for yourself. You could try asking for small plates for everyone.

Take Part in a Free Fitness Consultation. While it may not seem like this has anything to do with eating out, there are a lot of things you can learn from a free fitness consultation that can help you make smart choices. We all have different body types and metabolisms so what might be good for your friend, might not work on you. We offer free fitness consultations so you can get your numbers and we can give you tips on what specific ingredients you should avoid when going out for a meal.

Our fitness tips for women are especially helpful considering that we as women have a lot on our plate to take care of - figuratively and literally. Well, maybe not literally. What I mean to say, is that, as a woman, one of the best ways to let off all the tension and stress away is to indulge in a scrumptious meal. I understand. I’ve been there. But this does not mean we should neglect our beautiful body.

The bottom line is that you have to pay attention and give it a little more thought when you’re eating out… but it is still possible to stay healthy even while eating out! Don’t let fear stop you… just decide beforehand that you’re not going to indulge in every fried food you see on the menu!! Tell the person you’re eating with that you are trying to eat healthy food and let them help you. Your body is worth it! Feed it well!!

P.S. My husband, Dr. Ricky, and I have written a nutrition plan to lose weight, and it includes some quick and easy recipes! It will be up for purchase on my website THIS WEEK! Once you purchase a diet and exercise plan, then I will email you more recipes throughout the year to help you stay on track!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Holiday Eating
Tips for Beating the Holiday Bulge

Thanksgiving is just around the corner ya’ll!  Lauren again from Lauren Fox On Demand! This is the time of year when we need to be strategic & more aware to win this battle of the bulge! Late October to January 1st is the party season with friends & family galore! We need to enjoy our time together & not be overly restrictive & miserable, but we do need to strive for balance & moderation! I call this being in “maintenance mode”. The average American gains 9-13 pounds during the holiday season! Do NOT let this be you this year!

Let’s not abandon our healthy habits altogether because you have worked too hard. Think of these last three months of the year as the last quarter of the football game that you want to Win!  So, here are a few tips to go into the new year ahead of the game.

  1. If you have left over Trick or Treat candy, get rid of it! Take it to the office, give it away to the mail person, donate it to your church, or simply throw it away. Just don’t let it sit around your house because let’s face it, it’s just too tempting.
  2. Go Booze Free Sunday through Thursday! I enjoy my glass or two of Chardonnay most evenings myself, but the 120-160 calories per glass add up! Alcohol also tricks your body into thinking it’s hungry. We can save over 600 calories right there! Especially if you know you are going to attend a gathering that weekend, then if you partake of a couple of calorie laden dips, it’s a trade off! You can’t afford the 600 calories of wine plus the 600 calories of munchies!  (FYI: If you reduce your caloric intake by 500 calories a day, then in 7 days you cut 3,500 calories which means you lose one pound!)
  3. Stick to healthier eating habits during the week as well. Limit the carbs so you can have that little splurge on the weekend! & I’m saying ONE cheat meal, not a cheat day or weekend!
  4. Be mindful of snacking too! Allow that one time & only, use a smaller plate (like a salad plate) & absolutely no seconds! Eating slowly & enjoying your treat you strategized for is key.
  5. During your holiday meal, only treat yourself to foods you truly LOVE & look forward to all year. For example, my grandmother’s cornbread dressing that I now make is my Thanksgiving vice. I will forego the mashed potatoes & gravy for the dressing…strategy…I can’t have both! I also love my mother’s candied sweet potatoes, but I can only have a tablespoon or two max. I will just savor every bite!
  6. Schedule your workouts…a minimum of 3 a week, but 5 is better to beat the holiday bulge! Get “Lauren Fox On Demand” so you can work out anytime you want, in the convenience of your own home!  I even have some 15, 30 & 45 minute express classes if you don’t have time for an hour work out. Check out laurenfoxondemand.com for the $29.00 Fit & Foxy, Best Shape of Your Life deal!
  7. Get plenty of sleep. Our stress levels go up during the holidays because we have so many “extras” to do and that is not good for our bellies! The cortisol goes straight there! Double ugh! We need to be aware, taking better care of our bodies at this time. Try to go to bed one hour earlier than your norm. This will also help your focus so you can accomplish all you have to do without being sleep deprived and scattered.
  8. Stay hydrated! I always say, “Drink your water!” Did you know a lot of the time that we feel hungry is actually because we’re dehydrated? Drink plenty of water all day, every day and especially before you eat so your body doesn’t confuse hunger for thirst. You’ll be surprised how much fuller you’ll feel if you drink a big glass of water before your holiday meal or any meal.
  9. There’s a lot of social pressure during this time of year. Your friends and family might not have the same healthy lifestyle as you do and they may not understand where you are coming from. My mother always teases me for not eating like I use to, like her, but I do not want to end up in that sugar coma after our Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners anymore. My strategy this year is to not mention my plan. I’m just going to put less on my smaller plate, savor my meal by eating slowly, and enjoying my visit with family and friends!

Follow these tips, work-out and you’ll beat the holiday bulge this year! Yay you! 😊

Tips on Living Longer!

Happy Halloween y’all! Since it’s Halloween time and it’s the celebration of the
“Day of the Dead,” I started thinking about longevity and living life. As you probably know, I turned 55 this year, and now I want to elongate my lifespan as best I can! I read up on some advice from some centenarians (people who have lived past 100 years old), and I want to share some of their best advice… plus some things Dr. Ricky (my hubby) and I are sure that work!

Tips for Longevity

1) First and foremost, staying active is imperative! Move it so you don’t lose it! Many health problems come from a lack of movement. Don’t be sedentary! Make sure to stay active so your muscles, joints, and bones can keep working! It’s important to try to maintain flexibility as we age. Even a daily walk will help! Take the stairs instead of the elevator… little changes can make a big difference. This is a simple and realistic behavior that keeps your heart healthy, your mind motivated, and keeps diseases at bay.

2) Another important piece of this longevity strategy is to pay attention to what you put in your body. Try your best to make natural, organic food selections, avoiding any foods with labels. And certainly, avoid it if you can’t pronounce the ingredients on the label. If you want to get serious about this, stay tuned and check out my new diet… I’ve designed it specifically for longevity!

3) Remember to think positively! Keep that positive attitude no matter what. Turn lemons into lemonade like the saying goes! Staying around for many years to come has just as much to do with our minds as it does our bodies. We have to stay optimistic so we can continue staying on the path to good health even as we age! Be sure to count your blessings when you’re feeling down—this is always a helpful practice to shift your mindset to something more positive!

I’ve learned that it does you no good to wallow in self-pity. Yes, we will all face difficult things in life, but we have to keep moving forward and keep our spirits high. I’ve been through a lot in my life, but one of the main things that has gotten me through it all is a positive attitude. If I can do it, then you can, too!

4) You’ve got to be social if you want to stick around for a long time. Don’t isolate yourself! Get involved in something. Join a group that goes on outings. Adopt a pet! Studies have shown adopting a pet makes people happy, calms the nerves, gives you purpose and you’re saving a life! Not to mention the tremendous love you get each and every day! It’s a win, win! The people who tend to live the longest are the ones who have a support system around them, catching them when they fall and motivating them when they need it. Revamp your social life! Remember that you aren’t alone.

5) Practice gratitude because your mindset really does affect your health. Our mental outlook influences everything from our cardiorespiratory health to our sleep patterns to our posture. Adopting a mindset focused on growing, learning, and loving opens us up to new experiences. It facilitates creativity. It makes us more likely to take better care of those around us and of ourselves.

Advice from a Centenarian

One of my clients is from Spain. Her grandmother, along with most of her elderly relatives, is a centenarian. Her best advice is to drink a taste of clean, red wine every night and to cook your food in olive oil and garlic. She added that it’s best to eat vegetables as much as possible!! By clean wine, she’s referring to wine without preservatives. It’s easier to find clean wine in the Old World—Ricky and I discovered this while visiting Portugal over the summer. We enjoyed the best wine we have ever tasted out of a clay pitcher… the wine had never been bottled… so fresh! When we came back to the states, we signed up to sell clean wines because we were so impressed!

To wrap it up, don’t let this season pass you by without considering what you can do to invest in your health. We only get one mind and one body… treat them well! Remember these tips for longevity as you finish up the week!

Cheers to a longer, healthier life! Happy Halloween, y’all! Day of the Dead… not for us! Join me at www.laurenfoxondemand.com, or at least read my blog posts! There’s a lot more good information there, and it’s all free!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Bone Health
How About Dem Bones?

Happy Halloween, y’all! In honor of the fall holiday, I wanted to talk about bones!! Bone health is important for all ages, but especially for those of us over 40 and 50!

The Importance of Exercise

When we exercise, it helps our bones in a number of ways. It helps preserve bone density, which is more important than many people realize! Bone is made up of living tissue just like muscle is. It responds to exercise… we achieve greater bone density when we are active! Many studies have shown that bone mass peaks during our thirties and starts to decline after that. But exercise can help us from losing bone density as we age, so it’s important to keep up the hard work! Y’all know I always talk about sweating sexy and this is a big reason why!! The more we move, the better shape our bones will be in.

Though all exercise is good, weight-bearing and resistance exercises are best for bone health. Think about it… you’re working against gravity. More work for your body to do, which means more strength and bone density! Good exercises are hiking, jogging, playing tennis, climbing stairs, cycling and even dancing! Y’all know I love dancing!! My classes are great because you get everything you need for “dem bones, dem bones, dem healthy bones!!”

This is a major concern for many aging women… even more reason to take care of our bones while we have the chance! If you have osteoporosis, be sure to consult your doctor on what exercises are best and safe for you to do. It’s important to protect your spine with this condition… stay away from any exercise that involves a lot of flexing, bending, or twisting of the spine. This can compromise its stability and put you at risk for injury!

Exercise is only a piece of taking care of yourself if you have osteoporosis. You also need to make sure you are getting enough calcium and vitamin D! These two things help strengthen bones at any age, really! We all need to be sure we are getting ample amounts of both!

Fox Fitness Project

As some of you may know, Dr. Ricky and I founded the Fox Fitness Project, a nonprofit to fight childhood obesity! And when it comes to bone health in children, nutrition and exercise are just as important! Some new studies are showing that kids nowadays are more sedentary than in previous generations. This is contributing to bone problems later on! As kids, it’s important to exercise to build bone density to capacity! This is yet another reason Dr. Ricky and I are so passionate about our nonprofit… we believe that every kid deserves a healthy life, and not all of them have people in their lives who know how to provide that for them! Bone health isn’t just a consideration for us men and women over 50… it matters for all ages!!

Are you ready to get serious about your health? Want to strengthen “dem bones” and get on a path in the right direction? You are in the right place. We are here to help!! We only get one body – take care of it! It’s truly the most important thing you have! Check out my library of exercise videos… I’m always adding new ones! Remember to take care of yourself and keep moving!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Pay Attention!
…to Your Health!

Xoxo, Lauren🦊 How often do y’all think about how valuable your health is? Most of y’all have heard me use the saying “your wealth is in your health,” and it’s true! Health is the most important thing we have!! I recently had a crazy experience that reminded me of that!

Getting Sick

We all get sick sometimes. There’s hardly any way to avoid it altogether! We can get our flu shots and wash our hands, but sometimes we still get something that’s going around and start feeling gross. That happened to me about a week ago… I was feeling bad and took myself to the doctor. If you are serious about staying on top of your health, you need to act like it! Go see a doctor when you aren’t feeling well and don’t know what’s wrong. You never know when it could be something more serious! When I went to the doctor, I thought I might have the flu… I felt really bad! They did the flu test and it came back negative. Then they thought it might be strep, but that also came back negative. It’s a good thing I went because I sure didn’t know what was going on with my body! All I knew was that I couldn’t handle it at home and needed help getting back on track. We have to take active steps to stay healthy! Don’t always expect issues to resolve on their own! Better yet… get healthy now so that when sickness does come along, you’re ready to fight it!!

Finding a Solution

When your body needs to recover, find a solution that works best. There are two major keys to remember. First, make sure you have as much information on your health issue as you possibly can! This will help you and the doctor figure out how to best treat the problem. Second, be in good health year-round so that when you do get sick, you’re better prepared to fight it off! Taking care of yourself when you’re feeling good can help you heal faster and more efficiently when you start feeling bad.

As it turns out, I had a kidney infection! I had never felt so bad! My fingernails were purple and I was at the beginning stage of sepsis. The doctor said he would have sent anyone else straight to the hospital where they would likely have stayed for a week or longer. He said my body was doing an amazing job fighting through it all, so I got to stay at home and heal there. This is the most important reason we all need to exercise and eat better! I feel like my body was a lean, mean, fighting machine and I am SO grateful for that! The best way to handle getting sick is to be as healthy as you can in your day-to-day life! Don’t forget this, ladies!

Your Health Matters

I was thinking about this experience and was truly reminded how important our health is. We take it for granted too often! When things are going well and we feel fine, we can forget all the things we should be doing to ensure we STAY healthy for the long run!! Health isn’t a one and done thing! It’s a lifestyle… and an ongoing process! What are some ways you can better take care of yourself on a daily basis? It can be little things like getting enough sleep, eating a healthy, balanced diet, and exercising regularly! Take charge and make a change! We only get one body – take care of it! It’s truly the most important thing you have!

As fall rolls in, sickness starts to spread. Pay attention to your health and stay on top of taking care of yourself!! It’s worth it, y’all!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Mindful Eating
Eat When You’re Hungry!

At times, we all have a tendency to overeat! I know I do! Food can just look so good… smell so good… you just want more! Women’s hormone imbalances make us crave the most fattening food at times! The holidays will be here before you know it, so I want to help get you in the best position you can be to beat the holiday bulge! We don’t have time for that, right ladies?? There’s no use letting the holidays ruin all the hard work we put in the rest of the year.

When Do You Eat?

Think about it… do you usually eat because you’re hungry? Or are there other reasons driving your eating habits? It’s common to eat and crave food when we’re stressed, bored, tired, and especially when we’re with our friends! Parties and events where food is readily available at all times can feel like a trap! It’s too easy to just keep going back for more!!

If you’re mostly a stress eater (this is me!!), find another way to manage the stress in your life. Use your exercise time for that! Channel all the negativity into your workout and let food be for fueling your body, not comforting it. Maybe you eat when you get bored… this is also me, so I can relate. I like having something to munch on. I know lots of other people like this, too! It’s just nice to have snacks throughout the day, and I get it! But it leads to overeating and that’s what we want to avoid. If you’re bored and have time, pick up a hobby! Meet up with friends! If food merely satisfies the need to be doing something with your hands during a mundane workday, keep a pen in your hand… or even bring a tennis ball and leave it at your desk! Have something to fiddle around with while you’re working that isn’t food.

When you’re out with friends or in a place with lots of food available and easily accessible, create mental boundaries! Eat a healthy snack before you go so you’re not ravenous when you arrive. Think about your goals before you ever walk inside the room. Do you want to be eating all night? Do you think you need three different desserts? Well… are you going to regret it when you do a Lauren Fox on Demand workout tomorrow?? Take a moment to find your resolve and recognize that you don’t NEED to eat beyond the point of being satiated.

As women, our hormones can drive us crazy sometimes! There are certain days I would kill for chocolate. Ricky keeps me on dark chocolate… 86 percent or higher cacao is the goal! It’s better to have the “better” chocolate at home to grab so you don’t stop at a store and get a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup, which is something I have done many times!! Outsmart yourself and keep the “better” chocolate on hand for those moments when you’re desperately craving it.

Tips to Avoid Overeating

It’s way too easy to eat more than our bodies need, so here are a few things you can try if you’re having a problem stopping!

1) Don’t forbid yourself from ALL your guilty pleasures. That’s right… I said it! It’s actually better if you allow yourself to eat one or two of those sneaky treats you love. The total deprivation of all the good stuff can lead to binge eating, which is just as much of a problem! Knowing that something unhealthy isn’t completely forbidden and off limits will actually help you create healthy boundaries.

2) Avoid eating from the containers your food comes in. Set aside a single serving and just eat that, not more. We can mindlessly overeat when reaching for chip after chip from a large bag. It’s better to serve some out in a bowl or on a plate so you know when to stop.

3) Eat foods that are high in fiber! They will help you stay full for longer, and you’re less likely to keep eating when you feel full. Some fiber-rich foods are beans, vegetables, fruits, and oats.

4) Drink water instead of soda! Coke, even Diet coke, can eat a through rust, imagine what it’s doing to your insides! Studies have shown potential links between sugary beverages and overeating. Also, Aspartame, (the sweetener in diet sodas), has been shown to make people crave sugar! Try water with a little lemon juice and stevia for flavor. Plus, water is better for you anyway!

5) Try eating slowly. When we eat fast, the feeling of fullness that comes after a meal often comes too late. We’ve already eaten more than we need because we ate too fast! Put your fork down between each bite, chew thoroughly, then after you swallow, pick up your fork again. If you slow down the pace, your body is better able to alert you when it’s getting full. This is a powerful tool when it comes to avoiding overeating!

I know y’all can do this!! I am doing it with you! Let’s get ready to beat that holiday bulge! As always, be sure to check out the videos in my library… I’m always adding new workouts that you can do anytime, anywhere!

Until next time, xoxo! 🦊

Have you ever heard of collagen? If not, today’s your lucky day! I’m teaming up with my friend Stephanie Easterling to write this post and give you all the info and resources you need to be in the know about this vital part of healthy living!

What is Collagen?

If you’re unfamiliar, collagen is a protein that is a part of cartilage, bone, and other tissues in people and animals. It’s most known for keeping our skin and joints healthy, though it aids in many bodily functions. There are many types of collagen. Types 1 and 3 are often taken together to support skin, hair, bone, and nail health. Type 2 helps cartilage and joints. Though it’s good to take collagen supplements, our bodies do produce it.

How Our Bodies Make Collagen

Obviously, it’s great when bodies do what they are supposed to, right?? As we age, this tends to become harder than we’d like, and parts of our health start threatening to fall apart. But it’s good to understand how our bodies make collagen naturally and how you can identify a potential collagen deficiency!

In an ideal world, the body makes collagen by combining amino acids (nutrients you get from protein-rich foods), Vitamin C, zinc, and copper. The best food for boosting collagen specifically is bone broth, a lot of it. But, even if you are eating healthy and your body is making collagen on its own, there is no harm in taking supplements! Some signs that you may be collagen deficient are wrinkles, stiff tendons and ligaments, shrinking or weakening muscles, joint pain, discomfort or osteoarthritis, and gastrointestinal problems.

Both Stephanie and I have learned the importance of having enough collagen! It really does make a difference, especially for those of us over 40 or 50!! We both sell supplements through Modere and take them ourselves. Tablespoon AM and PM is all plus, it also has Hyaluronic Acid and Chondroitin!!!

Liquid BioCell® - the new generation of collagen, redefining the way we age and how we perform. Every product is formulated with our exclusive Collagen/HA Matrix® Technology to support joint and muscle fitness and connective tissue health, counteract skin photoaging, restore youthful skin, and support healthy hair, nails, gums and eyes.

Collagen - Derived from the same molecule that we have in our own bodies (our bodies recognize it and use it to produce more collagen).

H/A or Hyaluronic Acid - a clear, gooey substance that is naturally produced by your body. The largest amounts of it are found in your skin, connective tissue, and eyes. Its main function is to retain water to keep your tissues well lubricated and moist.  It helps hydrate your skin to look plumper.

Chondroitin Sulfate - an important structural component of cartilage and provides much of its resistance to compression.  Shock absorber!

There are four different formulas of the Modere Liquid BioCell Collagen Supplement. We have Pure, Life, Skin, and Sport.  There’s a little breakdown of the differences below! All are taken 1 tablespoon in the morning and 1 tablespoon at night. You can take them directly by drinking or they can be added to any liquid or food.

Pure is sweetened with Stevia and is less than 5 calories. It’s great for people with fruit allergies or who don’t want added sugar or carbs.

Life is made of 13 super fruits and has a sweet taste. It has great anti-inflammatory and cardiovascular benefits!

Skin has a variety of supporting ingredients, like ceramides, that plump and lift the skin. It also contains bamboo extract, antioxidants and other benefits with super fruits.

Sport is best for building muscle due to the added amino acids—great for recovery, endurance and focus. It’s great for professional athletes as it is NSF certified, meaning while it is a performance enhancer, it will not show up on a drug screen.

Backed by multiple clinical studies, Liquid BioCell® is redefining the multi-billion-dollar anti-aging industry and has been recognized with 7 U.S. and international patents plus numerous industry awards.

Take a look and see which formula of collagen supplement from Modere might be right for you! All of these formulas are great because they have molecules that are smaller than many other sources, making them the most absorbable for our bodies! Other powders, capsules, and tablets do work, but this liquid collagen supplement works faster! Our bodies can absorb the nutrients without having to break down a solid first! Liquid is the most efficient way, and that’s just one reason why this supplement is so great!
